About department:
The Department (before 2023 – laboratory) of Psychology of Small Groups and Intergroup Relations was established in 2006 with the aim of investigating the problems of ingroup and intergroup interaction in various social situations.
Researchers of the department study the problems of group interaction in complex social situations; intergroup interaction in conditions of war and peace; group identity; group unconscious; psychology of collective trauma; psychology of roles and gender psychology; mental health; psychology of historical memory; diverse aspects of psychotherapy, psychological rehabilitation and counseling psychology and many others.
The main scientific achievements of the Department include:
- Socio-psychological theory of group identity in small groups of the educational and social environments
- The provisions of the theory of the conscious and unconscious as factors in the regulation of group interaction
- The provisions of the theory of problem group interaction in difficult social situations
- The concept of genesis of phenomenon of ingroup interaction
- The concept of explanatory principles of intergroup interaction
- Political-historical psychological theory of collective trauma
Over the years such researchers as Doctors of Psychological Sciences V. V. Gorbunova, V. R. Dorozhkin, O. A. Leshchynska, Candidates of Psychological Sciences O. L. Voznesenskaya, N. V. Dyshlova, G. V. Tsyganenko were the members of the department team.

Since 2024, the department team has been carrying out scientific research on the topic Scientific and methodological support for the psychological education of the population of Ukraine experiencing the trauma of war under the supervision of: Chorna L. G. Performers: Gornostai P. P., Vus V. I., Aslanyan T. S., Pinchuk O. V., Pletka O. T., Starovoitenko O. O., Revera I. I.
The purpose of the study: to develop a scientifically based model and a set of methodological tools for psychological education of the population of Ukraine experiencing the trauma of war.
Task:
– To summarize the world experience of psychological education of the population suffering from the war trauma and systematize basic psychological knowledge in accordance with the needs of vulnerable groups and other target groups suffering from war trauma.
– To develop a model of psychological education of the population suffering from the trauma of war.
– To develop a set of methodological tools for psychological education of the population of Ukraine and the technology of its use in the practices of social interaction typical for the wartime.
– To develop a methodology for the formation of competencies of specialists who will provide psychological education of the population during the war and who assist to vulnerable population groups during the wartime.
– To prepare recommendations for scientific and methodological support of psychological education of the population, which will contribute to increasing the level of their psychological competence and recovery from war traumas.

- The seminar Family Values to reveal the specifics of a psychologist’s work with vulnerable groups of the population (veterans of the Russian-Ukrainian war, IDPs, and their families).
- The training seminar I Am Within Myself and Others to reveal the specifics of psychological work with personal boundaries
- Theory and Practice of Psychological Counseling (460 hours). The program is designed to improve the qualifications of counseling psychologists, practical psychologists, and methodological psychologists in the education system, as well as psychologists at social service centers for youth. The program takes into account the modern requirements for the professional activities of a counseling psychologist. The program aims to provide participants with basic theoretical and methodological knowledge, practical skills and abilities, and reflection on personal counseling experience working with adults, children, adolescents, families, etc.
- Advanced training course “Art Therapy: Theory and Practice of Counseling”
- Volunteer School (an educational training program consisting of eight modules) is aimed at mastering methods of working with vulnerable groups of the population (veterans of the Russian-Ukrainian war, internally displaced persons, and their families)
